Introduction to Media Literacy and Nazi Propaganda

Participants explore the events of the Holocaust through the lens of media, by understanding media literacy questions and examining propaganda deployed by the Nazis to discriminate against Jews and other minorities. Educators will gain tools to facilitate classroom discussions and support students in analyzing media in today’s world.

 

9:45-10:00 AM: Break

10:00-10:35: Introduction to Education in the Third Reich

In this session, participants will gain an understanding of the education system under the Nazi regime and how the Nazis adjusted it to indoctrinate the youth of Germany. 

10:35-12:15: Learning Stations (participants will rotate in pre-assigned groups through all stations)

  • Group 1: Oath and Opposition: Teachers in the Third Reich

1:20-1:35: Reflections from the Morning

As we reconvene from lunch, we will hear Holocaust survivor testimony about propaganda and education in the Third Reich and participate in the Last Word protocol before learning about Nazi Propaganda through the State of Deception lesson.

1:35-2:50: State of Deception: Nazi Propaganda

How did words, images, and other techniques shape the general public’s thinking in Nazi Germany? What are some ways participants can engage their students in discussions about antisemitism and hatred? Participants will discuss propaganda and participate in an activity designed to help implement the study of Nazi propaganda in their classrooms.

 

2:50-3:00: Break

3:00-3:55: The Life and Legacy of Gizella Abramson

Lee Holder will share the challenges that Gizella Gross Abramson faced during the Holocaust and her legacy for what she accomplished after the Holocaust, especially in North Carolina. 

3:55-4:00: Evaluations and Certificates
