Explore the Holocaust through the powerful ways artists, musicians, composers, and playwrights have responded through music, visual art, and theater. Educators will engage with performers and professionals connected to upcoming Holocaust-themed productions by Piedmont Opera and the Winston-Salem Symphony, discovering creative approaches for bringing these works and themes into the classroom. Participants will also hear from a Holocaust survivor or 2G/3G speaker and explore resources and strategies for using the arts to deepen students’ understanding of memory, resilience, resistance, and the human experience. This interdisciplinary workshop welcomes Holocaust educators as well as English, social studies, visual art, music, and theater teachers.

On December 3, 2026, Holocaust survivor Dr. Lex Silbiger l will join us via Zoom to talk to students in classrooms about how he and his family survived the Holocaust from 9:30-10:30 AM. Teachers can register their classroom and a Zoom link will be sent two weeks before the event. Classrooms from outside NC are also welcome to join. We can have up to 500 teachers register for the Zoom. As a six-year-old Jewish child in the Netherlands, Dr. Lex Silbiger fled with his family through France before finding refuge in Jamaica, escaping the Nazi persecution that later claimed the lives of his grandparents at Auschwitz. After the war, his family returned to Holland, and Lex has carried forward a powerful message of gratitude, resilience, and the value of life, grounded in the sacrifices his parents made to save him. |
