This workshop will offer participants a chance to reflect on basic Holocaust history, understanding that it was a watershed event in the history of the world, while examining the choices that people, groups, and governments made during World War II. Concurrently and with historian and author Dr. Leonard Rogoff, teachers will learn about the Jewish life in the Tar Heel State from colonial times to the present, including our involvement in World War II. Dr. Rogoff considers how the North Carolina Jewish experience differs from that of Jews in other southern states but how contributions by Jewish residents were significant in the fight against stereotypes and their service to the United States. Best Practices will involve teachers learning about and utilizing a multi-layer timeline of world, national, and state events from this time period.
