Join Holocaust elective teachers from across North Carolina for a day of collaboration, practical learning, and community building from 9:30 AM-4:00 PM. Together, educators will explore effective approaches to planning a Holocaust elective course, share curriculum ideas, creative projects, and meaningful assessments, tackle the unique challenges of teaching this complex history, and develop a network of colleagues who can continue to support one another throughout the year.

From 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, participants will learn about the many curriculum resources developed for the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act, experience foundational lessons for teaching the Holocaust, and learn how to effectively present these lessons to students and adults. Each participant will also receive a copy of Salvaged Pages, a collection of young people's diaries from the Holocaust.

English and Social Studies teachers in middle and high school, curriculum leaders, and administrators in NC are all eligible to attend the Gizella Abramson Teaching the Holocaust fall conference at the Gentry Education Center in Harnett county. Come experience breakout sessions on a variety of topics for both beginning and advanced Holocaust educators. District leaders, instructional supervisors, and classroom teachers are invited to attend the conference.

Explore the Holocaust through the powerful ways artists, musicians, composers, and playwrights have responded through music, visual art, and theater. Educators will engage with performers and professionals connected to upcoming Holocaust-themed productions by Piedmont Opera and the Winston-Salem Symphony, discovering creative approaches for bringing these works and themes into the classroom. Participants will also hear from a Holocaust survivor or 2G/3G speaker and explore resources and strategies for using the arts to deepen students’ understanding of memory, resilience, resistance, and the human experience. This interdisciplinary workshop welcomes Holocaust educators as well as English, social studies, visual art, music, and theater teachers.

Learn about curriculum resources developed for the Gizella Abramson Holocaust Education Act in NC and how to teach foundational lessons about the Holocaust such as the Guidelines for Teaching the Holocaust, the historical photo narrative lesson, building a timeline of the Holocaust, and a lesson for teaching about Salvaged Pages, a collection of young people's diaries in the Holocaust. Each participant will receive a copy of Salvaged Pages as well!

Join Holocaust educators, organizations, and educational leaders from across North Carolina and beyond for a new statewide gathering dedicated to strengthening Holocaust education through collaboration, connection, and shared expertise. Presented by the NC Council on the Holocaust in partnership with NCDPI, the Summit will feature a keynote speaker, diverse breakout sessions led by educators and Holocaust organizations, and opportunities to discover resources, programs, and expertise available to schools across the state. More than a conference, the Summit is designed to bring together the people and organizations doing this work—creating new connections and building a stronger, more collaborative future for Holocaust education in North Carolina.

Interested in presenting? Holocaust educators and organizations will be invited to submit proposals to lead breakout sessions and share their expertise, resources, and innovative approaches. The Call for Proposals will open in October 2026.

Resistance during the Holocaust took many forms—from preserving faith, culture, and human dignity to organized underground movements and armed revolt. Through powerful primary sources and hands-on lessons, educators will explore the choices individuals and groups made as they confronted Nazi persecution and oppression. Participants will consider how these histories can help students think critically about their own choices and responsibilities in defending human rights and responding to injustice today.

Explore a century of genocide through a comparative examination of atrocities from the turn of the 20th century through the Rwandan genocide of the 1990s. Through historical case studies and classroom-ready approaches, educators will examine not only how and why genocides unfolded, but how governments, international organizations, and individuals responded—or failed to respond—as mass violence occurred. Participants will consider how international action and inaction shaped these events and explore meaningful ways to help students understand the choices, responsibilities, and consequences surrounding genocide.
