Foundational Lessons about the Holocaust

FOUNDATIONAL LESSONS FOR TEACHING THE HOLOCAUST

The North Carolina Council on the Holocaust is committed to providing educators with high-quality instructional materials that honor the history and memory of the Holocaust. This page offers access to a set of core lessons that serve as an essential starting point for teaching about the Holocaust in middle and high school classrooms. Drawing from trusted partners such as the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and Echoes and Reflections, as well as lessons authored by the Council itself, these resources are intended to equip teachers with strong foundations for effective Holocaust education.

These lessons are flexible and adaptable, allowing teachers to meet the needs of diverse classrooms while maintaining historical accuracy and emotional sensitivity. By combining scholarly rigor with accessible instructional strategies, they ensure that students not only learn what happened but also consider the moral and civic lessons that the Holocaust continues to teach.

Teachers are encouraged to consider the USHMM’s Guidelines for Teaching the Holocaust before they implement instruction about the Holocaust.
